	1.약한추측	~일지도 모른다	might	may not = might not	may have p.p = might have p.p ~이었을지도 모른다.	may not have p.p = might not have p.p ~아니었을지도 모른다.
	2.허락, 허가	~해도 좋다	can	cannot(= can't)	could = might	could not (= couldn't) = might not
	3.기원	~하소서	형 태)     May + S + 동사원형~ !
	4. 관용적 표현
	1) S + V~  so that  +  S' + may(=can) + 동사원형'~   : S'가 V'하기위해서 S는 V한다.                             (~하기위해)   부정문)  → S + V~  so that +  S' + may(=can) not + 동사원형' ~  : S'가 V'하지 않기위해서 S는 V한다. =  S + V~     lest     + S' + should + 동사원형~                     (~하지 않기위해서)    2) S + may well + 동사원형~  : S가 ~하는것도 당연하다.      3) S + may as well + 동사원형~  : S는 ~하는편이 더 낫다.          (= had better)

 

예 문)

1.약한추측 

평서문)

ex) It may be true. 

  = It might be true. 

     그것이 사실일지도 모른다.

 

부정문)

     It may not be true. 

  = It might not be true. 

     그것이 사실이 아닐지도 모른다.

 

과거형)

     It may have been true. 

  = It might have been true. 

     그것이 사실이었을지도 모른다.

 

부정형)

     It may not have been true. 

  = It might not have been true. 

     그것이 사실이 아니었을지도 모른다.

 

 

2.허락, 허가

 

평서문)

ex) You may go first.

  =  You can go first. 

     먼저 가도 좋아.

 

부정문)

     You may not  go first.

  =  You cannot go first. 

     먼저 가면 안돼.

 

과거형)

     She told him that he might go first.

  = She told him that he could go first.

     그녀는 그에게 먼저가도 좋다고 말했다.

 

부정형)

     She told him that he might not go first.

  = She told him that he couldn't go first.

     그녀는 그에게 먼저가면 안된다고 말했다.

 

3.기원

 

기원문)

ex) May you live long!

     장수하세요!

 

ex) May you rest in peace!

     평화로이 영면하소서!

          

 

4.관용적 표현

 

1)

 

ex) She went to the station so that she might(= could) catch the train.

      그녀는 기차를 타기위해서 기차역으로 갔다.

 

ex) She studied very hard so that she might not(= couldn't) fail the exam again.

  =  She studied very hard  lest she should  fail the exam again.

     그녀는 그 시험에 또 낙제하지 않기 위해서 매우 열심히 공부했다.

 

 

2)

 

ex) She may well get upset to see such a sight.

     그녀가 그러한 광경을 보고 기분상해하는것도 당연하다.

 

 

3)

ex) She may as well ask for help.

  =  She had better ask for help.

      그녀는 도움요청을 하는 편이 더 낫다.
